Hard Target: Shifting the Narrative on Guns in TV & Film While Protecting the Creative Process
Presented by the Writers Education Committee, this timely and topical virtual panel event offers information, resources, and creative suggestions for writers who are crafting stories that involve guns and gun violence. TV and screenwriters did not cause America’s epidemic of gun violence, but we are the ones who can depict new models of responsible gun ownership, as well as consequences of reckless gun use. As part of the program, we provide a summary of gun violence in America that explains why we’re in this situation. We review what has worked, and what hasn’t, in the Gun Violence Prevention movement. We also discuss The Brady Letter, why it has gained traction, and how much power writers have to impact and influence cultural change. Panelists: writers Brian Anthony (Kung Fu, Co-EP, FBI, Station 19, former Green Beret & Army Ranger), Dawn Prestwich & Nicole Yorkin (Hit & Run, Co-creators/showrunners, The Killing), J. David Shanks (61st Street EP, former Chicago Police officer), Kris Brown, President of the Brady Center, and Juano Queen, Senior Vice President, Paramount Pictures; moderator: Ken LaZebnik (Army Wives).
